Frequently Asked Questions

We tried to think of everything we have ever been asked, could be asked, or might never ever be asked.

And here it is; the most comprehensive list of FAQ in the history of Farm Trails.

The Moreton Bay Farm Trail offers a self-driving experience, allowing you to explore participating farms that welcome visitors for the day. Upon ticket purchase, you will receive a trail guide to help you organise your itinerary. You have the flexibility to begin the trail at any of the farms involved and visit as many or as few as you like according to your schedule.

The Moreton Bay Farm Trail is perfect for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and wish to explore mostly small-scale farms dedicated to making a positive impact. Meet passionate farmers who have chosen to trade the typical nine-to-five workday for cultivating produce as nature intended. Our participating farms are mostly boutique operations managed by individuals and families passionate about sustainable agriculture. If this resonates with you, the farm trail is an ideal experience.

Your ticket to the Moreton Bay Farm Trail unlocks access to small-scale boutique farms that have opened their farm gates exclusively for the day. You will gain an opportunity to explore working farms, peek behind the scenes, meet the farmers and purchase in-season flowers and produce. Additionally, some farms will host mini-markets, inviting other local farmers and producers to showcase their products.

Farm Hosts will give regular talks, starting on the hour, with any variations noted in the Trail Guide  (for example, Ocean View Estates will only provide talks at 10am and 3pm in the vineyard). This is a great way to get to know their stories.

Each farm has its own distinctive offerings. More details about each farm can be found here. Additionally, every farm will host a scheduled talk, with most starting on the hour (the exception being Ocean View Estates who will offer talks in the vineyard at 10am and 3pm.) This is a great way to know the story behind the farm.

Unfortunately not. Pets are not permitted on the farm trail due to biosecurity measures at the working farms. Although we know your furry friend would have a great day out, we kindly request that you leave them at home.

You are free to arrange your own itinerary using the trail map included in the Trail Guide. Additionally, we have included some suggestions in the guide that you might find helpful. These  proposed itineraries are tailored around specific interests and geographic locations.

Upon arrival at a participating farm, you will be welcomed and requested to present your tickets. You can have the tickets stored on your phone or you can print them out, whichever you prefer. We just ask that you have them prepared for inspection.

We recommend you bring the following along for the farm trail:

  • Esky to keep any produce and flowers you purchase cool and fresh.
  • Sturdy, closed-in shoes.
  • Hat and sunscreen.
  • Rain appropriate gear (just in case).
  • Moreton Money gift cards that will be accepted by many farms and producers (learn more!)
  • While food and drinks are available for purchase along the trail, feel free to bring along a blanket and picnic to enjoy at one of the farms along the way.
  • A sense of adventure!

To explore the farms along the Moreton Bay Farm Trail, tickets are required. Since most farms are not usually open to the public, tickets provide exclusive behind-the-scenes access, plus you can meet other local producers at the mini-markets held at various farms. A few locations are open to the public on a regular basis: Green Haven Stall and City Chicks are open to the public every day of the week. Ocean View Estates are open from Wednesday to Sunday. Green Thumb Farm at the Samford Farm Precinct welcomes volunteers on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the farm gate is open Saturdays 9-11am.

The Moreton Bay Farm Trail offers families and children an opportunity to get out into nature, visit local farms and sample fresh local produce. We have created this fun downloadable kids booklet your children can do while travelling between farms. Certain farms provide free or paid kids activities; see the farm descriptions for more information and you can pre-order children's activities here.

Some farms provide the chance to view animals; refer to the Trail Guide or farmer descriptions for more information. Working farms must adhere to biosecurity regulations and prioritise the safety and well-being of their animals, and as such, most farms do not allow interactions with farm animals. City Chicks, located in Samford, offers visitors the chance to feed poultry and chickens. They also sell tickets for children to interact with baby chicks in a secure, enclosed play area.

We are thrilled to welcome two larger scale farms to the Spring Farm Trail: TSL Family Farms, a commercial strawberry farm selling to Coles, and Ocean View Estates, an award-winning winery in Ocean View.

While the Moreton Bay Farm Trail strives to be inclusive to all ages and abilities, we understand the nature of farms doesn't always make that easy.  To help you plan your day, our farm hosts have provided a short description of their terrain so you can make an informed decision of the itinerary that may be suitable for you. If you have any concerns about the accessibility of the trail please reach out to us and we’ll discuss your needs and help you as best we can.

To support a farm trail that’s as sustainable as possible, consider:

- Bringing reusable coffee cups, bags and drink bottles.
- Carpooling with family or friends.

Not all farms provide toilet facilities. To identify farms with toilets easily, we have added a restroom icon next to those farms in the Trail Guide. Look for the restroom icon in the farm descriptions to locate farms with toilet facilities. We suggest using toiletmap.gov.au to find public toilets during your journey.

Parking will be different at every farm, please follow prompts at each site.

Attendees of past farm trails shared how they found inspiration, gained valuable knowledge, and discovered insights applicable to their own gardens. Additionally, some farms on the trail sell seedlings, compost solutions and other products to bring a piece of the farm trail experience back to your own backyard, or offer workshops you can book into at a later date to learn new skills.

Due to our farms being predominantly boutique farms with limited produce, most farms could only open for a single day. The farm trail will now take place on one day - Saturday September 7th - with all farms participating. This change allows you the flexibility to visit any farm or area that fits your schedule. Additionally, we have extended the operating hours from 9am to 4pm.

The charm of local farm trails lies in the chance they offer visitors to experience the local agri-culture of a region. Moreton Bay stands out for its semi-rural farms nestled near one of Australia’s major cities. The farms along the Moreton Bay Farm Trail are typically measured in acres rather than hectares, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices like permaculture, regenerative methods and organic farming.

However, you don’t have to be passionate about sustainable agriculture to have a great day out. If you seek a delightful day exploring boutique mini-farms, buying fresh seasonal local produce, driving through scenic green landscapes, and enjoying fresh country air close to home, this farm trail is a perfect choice.
